Saying Yes to New Things
Today our son is sick, and he is floating in and out of sleep on the couch, playing with his tablet, and eating like a bird.
I hate that he's sick, I hate that fall brings these colds and sore throats and fevers to our house, but today I chose to receive the slowness with a deep breath, not kicking and screaming.
In this season, which is anything but slow, I'm finding new ways to say yes. Saying yes to good things, to things that change me for the better, to saying kind words and making special plans and yes to the Holy Spirit even when I think I know better.
Yes to slowness, for example.
Today that looked like walking to the smaller, nearer grocery store and picking up the things needed to make homemade chicken soup, and making in the moments between caring for my son.
It looked like signing up for a membership that will help me become a better writer, one of my life goals.
It looks like accepting our seemingly small ministry, trusting God with the future, and applying myself to what I've been given: teaching preschoolers, children's ministry, a language exchange, a daughter and a son to disciple, language learning.
Of course it's important to say no - we can't say yes to everything. But saying yes to one thing is saying no to other things, as we aim to follow our true priorities. Do you know what your true priorities are? I'm working on a exercise to figure that out in my ministry and creative life.
What does saying yes look like to you these days?
